Introduction
The Arches
Guest House in Whitby is a traditional seaside bed and breakfast accommodation, offering 9, mainly
en-suite, double, single, family and twin rooms, over 4 floors. We
aim to cater for the needs of all visitors and the following statement is
a summary of our provision. If you have any specific questions about our
guesthouse accommodation please feel free to call us and we will endeavour to help.
It should be noted that due to the physical constraints of our Victorian
building, we are not suitable for wheelchair bound guests. However,
where there is a will there is always a way. We will do our utmost to
accommodate anyone who wishes to stay at the Arches Guesthouse, and
we aim to make that stay equally as enjoyable and comfortable as possible.
Pre-Arrival
You may
contact us initially via the guesthouse telephone or our Freephone, our internet
website or numerous portal sites, Tourist Information Centres, or, just call at the door. The
Arches
guesthouse brochures are available upon request, or may be collected from our
display rack in the entrance porch.
Directions by road

From the West: York: A64 onto A169 onto A171 into Whitby.

Then follow signs to the West Cliff and Pavilion, we are one street back from the sea front.
Directions by Public Transport
The Whitby railway train station, bus station and coach drop off point
are located in the town centre, which is approximately a10 minute walk away
from the Arches Guesthouse (please
note that you will need to negotiate a fairly steep hill up to the West Cliff where we are located). All trains into Whitby come via
Middlesbrough. Alternatively, take the train to York and then bus (CoastLiner) to Whitby, or train to Scarborough and bus ( 93 or 56 ) to
Whitby. There are plenty of local taxi services available and some operators have wheelchair accessible taxis if required.
Arrival & Car Parking Facilities
The
Arches Guest House does not have private parking, but ample on-street parking is available on a
first come first served basis. At the time of writing, on-street
parking in the vicinity of The Arches is free and without time restriction (please ensure that this is still correct prior to your arrival).
If no obvious spaces are available, and you are happy to do so, please double park outside the Arches for unloading purposes or dropping of
members of your party who have impaired mobility (remember to turn on your hazard lights).
We are happy to assist guests with their luggage or offer a supporting arm to negotiate the front steps.
Both the town centre and seafront are just a few minutes walk from the Arches
guesthouse. It should be noted that Whitby seaside resort is hilly, with some quite
steep inclines.
Main Entrance & Reception Public Areas
Access
to the Arches Guesthouse from the pavement to the front door is via a flight of 5 steps of various heights and depths. (1st step: 4" high x 11" deep, 2nd step: 6"
high x 2' 2" deep, 3rd step: 7" high x 2' 2" deep, 4th step: 7" high x 2'10" deep, top step: 8" high into porch). The steps are tiled with
non-slip tiles, and have high visibility edging strips. A sturdy hand-rail on the left hand side runs from the lower step to the building, and a
grab rail is positioned to the left of the outer door to aid entry into the porch.
The outer front door remains open during normal hours (shut and locked at approximately 10.30 pm). There is an external door bell push by
the grab rail. The inner door remains closed and locked, via a Yale lock, at all times. There is a door bell push within the porch on the left
hand side inner door frame.
The narrowest point of entry is the inner door at 2' 10" wide.
The porch is 5' 10" long x 3' 8" wide with loose, rubber backed foot mats.
On entry into our home there is an 'L' shaped hallway, each leg being approximately 17' 10" long and 2' 8" wide at the narrowest point.
All public areas are fully carpeted and well lit.

A public pay telephone is located next to the information board.
A bell push is located on the door frame of the basement access door via which the proprietors may be summoned.
Information leaflets, including attractions and public transport timetables are readily available
The RADA Key is available (hung up by the pay phone).
The stairway leads off the hall to the upper 2 floors and another stairway leads to the basement owners accommodation and guest dining
room.
Public Areas - WC
The Arches Guesthouse does not have a public area toilet facilities, but each guestroom has its own
private facilities.
Dining Room
The Arches guesthouse dining room is located in the basement, accessed by a flight of 15 steps 24" wide and 7" high. There is an electric chair lift with half
seat and foot board (for guests safety and comfort, assistance is always given with the operation of the lift).
The stairs lead on to a short level hallway and then into the level floored Dining Room.
We provide a hearty traditional Yorkshire Breakfast (The Arches Full Monty). A vegetarian option is also available and we will cater for any
special dietary requirement by prior arrangement.
A Braille Menu is available, as is a large print version. Menu's are also located in the Room Information Folders and are on display in the
Dining Room and Porch.
The Dining Room is well lit, has a good quality fitted carpet and light coloured modern robust furniture. The chairs have cloth covered padded
seats with hard backs, and the tables are of traditional sturdy 4 leg construction. All tables and chairs are moveable to suit guests
requirements.
Guests with impaired mobility are seated at appropriate tables dependent on their needs.
We offer Room Service to those guests who are unable to manage the basement stairs and/or stair lift.
Breakfast is inclusive of our nightly tariff.
Orders are taken at your table and your meal is freshly cooked and then served to you. Toast (white or brown) may be ordered at any time
throughout breakfast.
A selection of fresh fruit, cereals, preserved fruit, jams, fruit juices and Greek style Yogurt are available at the Breakfast Bar, located within
the dining room. Staff are more than happy to help if required.
There are no public toilets available in the vicinity of the Dining Room and guests are asked to use their own room facilities.
Laundry
In an emergency, we can wash and dry guests clothing, but it is emphasised that this is an emergency service only.
Leisure Facilities
No leisure facilities are available within The Arches Guesthouse, but an excellent Leisure Centre with indoor swimming pool is located just a 3 minute
walk away.
Outdoor Facilities, Grounds and Gardens
The Arches Guesthouse is a well built typical Victorian grand town house of its day that has no grounds or gardens. However, the beach is
just 5 minutes away and the West Cliff amenity area is a 3 minute stroll. There is more than ample green space for exercising and dog
walking, etc, nearby.
Bedrooms
The
Arches guesthouse
offers a variety of room types over 3 floors, including 2 large and one small en-suite double rooms on the ground floor, a multi-bedded
en-suite family room (sleeps up to 5), a double en-suite room and a single room with private bathroom on the first floor, and a multi-bedded
en-suite family room (sleeps up to 4), a double en-suite room and a single room with private bathroom on the second floor.
All bedrooms are carpeted and bathrooms have vinyl flooring.
The guesthouse accommodation contain a variety of general bedroom furnishings and the 4 6 x 6 6 double beds and 3 x 6 6 single beds have good quality
mattresses offering generally firm back support.
Bathrooms differ in size and shape and are generally small. All contain electric showers in either single or double shower cubicles (we have
no baths in the building).
All guest rooms benefit from adjustable central heating hot water radiators (fed from a timer controlled central heating boiler) and desk or
pedestal air circulation fans. An electric heater can be provided if required.
A colour television, radio alarm clock, hairdryer and well stocked hospitality tray (fresh milk on request) are also present in each guest room.
Some aids are available on request, including a toilet seat booster, shower stool, portable induction loop hearing device and sound operated
vibrating pillow pad alarm clock.
The three ground floor rooms have flashing beacon fire alarms as well as audio fire alarms fitted

Future Plans
The
Arches Guesthouse bnb Accommodation in Whitby
is continually being improved on a regular and scheduled basis. We are currently fitting double sized showers with
grab rails into our guest bedrooms wherever possible.
